I'm Angela Arteritano

A Venezuelan American multidisciplinary artist, choreographer, and researcher, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art and a Master of Fine Arts in Choreography. My work deals with issues of migration and identity through an interdisciplinary practice. I utilize my experience in Visual Arts and Traditional Flamenco Dance as tools to cultivate an experimental practice that is rooted in tradition but pursues new ways of understanding. The itinerant and multidisciplinary nature of my work allows for a constant displacement and reinterpretation of medium and form across disciplines; one that facilitates the disruption of conventions of artistic classification. The work itself focuses on performative events but results in a compendium of interdisciplinary discourses.  These immersive experiences address a multiplicity of dualities across various concepts such as collective versus individual identity construction, the intersection of art and performance, and choreography as a tool to bridge the gap between artistic disciplines. My work has been featured in art galleries, performing arts theaters, and alternative spaces throughout the United States and internationally. Some of these spaces include The Miramar Cultural Center; Bayou Theater, Match Theater; Texas State Galleries; Denton Arts Center; among others. Additionally, I have been recognized and supported by various non-profit organizations; including the recognition of 2021 Cultura Power Grant Awardee by San Jose’s leading Latinx Art Organization – MACLA; the support of Studio 210 summer 2021 Residency program; and Ca$h Dance award 2022 by Dancer’s Group in San Francisco, and the Cultural Growth Award by On Stage Vacaville.

My most recent dance film and multidisciplinary project “Markme” has been broadly recognize and awarded in film festivals around the world, including the recognition of Best First Time Director by the Vesuvius International Film Festival in Campania, Italy; Honorary Mention at the London International Monthly Film Festival, Semi-finalist for best women empowerment short at the Paris International Short Festival, and best experimental short at Ag & Art Film Festival.

Solo Exhibitions: “Migrar-é”, FLEX Gallery, San Marcos, TX. November 18, 2019. Group Exhbitions: “On Traditions and Repetition” MACLA, San Jose. Jun 3, 2022 – August 14, 2022. “Event Horizons” Universidad de Puerto Rico, San Juan, PR. April 2022; and Q Art Ath Gallery, Athens, Greece. January 2022. “Something Out of Nothing”. Texas State Galleries, December 2014. “Materials Hard and soft”. Greater Denton Arts Council. 2014. “All Student Juried Exhibition”, 2014 - Juror Merit Award recipient

As I seek to understand my ever-changing relation to tradition from my perspective as a Latina immigrant artist, I  find myself going from setting to setting without really making a distinction. Gallery exhibitions, dance films , or theater productions. My projects constantly explore the multiple dialogues and layers of complexity  characterictic to my unique conceptual framework, but also to my  multidisciplinary practice. Even though my focus lays in the space in between, the intersection of arts and performance; Painting has a unique way to facilitate a tangible connection between my projects across settings, while simultaneously highlighting an important moment of resolution and closure within my overall artistic practice.

My methods consist of an array of unique processes devised by my own practice as research methodologies. Some of my methods include abstraction through choreographic tracing, unit deconstruction and reconstruction,  and Intuitive painting responding to body recalls of performance and fragmented choreographic materials.
